Andres Herkel: "Azerbaijan should settle a number of issues before presidential elections"

Rapporteur of the PACE Monitoring Committee for Azerbaijan Yevgeniya Jivkova arrived in Azerbaijan.

She told APA that her visit aims to collect facts about the election situation in the country and the fulfillment of commitments undertaken by Azerbaijan before the Council of Europe. A report will be worked out by results of the visit.

In the framework of the visit to Baku, the co-rapporteurs will hold meetings with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliytev, speaker of parliament Ogtay Asadov, as well as Ministers of Foreign and Internal Affairs and Justice.

The rapporteurs will meet with representatives of political parties, human rights activists, NGOs, medias and prisoners.  

According to the other PACE Monitoring Committee Rapporteur for Azerbaijan, Andres Herkel, there are a number of issues, which the country should better settle before presidential elections. Among these issues, he called problems with media, political prisoners and problems with legislation, including the Election Code and the Law on Freedom of Assembly.
