Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry: Opening of Turkish-Armenian border will raise tensions in the region

13 April 2009 [11:46] - TODAY.AZ
We are open and hold transparent external policy and always clearly state the priorities on discussed issues, said spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan Elkhan Polukhov.
"Relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey continue developing dynamically. We are allies, strategic partners and all issues between us are settled in a working order", noted he commenting  on the recent discussions and debates in the light of the spread information about possible opening of state border and restoration of diplomatic relations between Ankara and Yerevan.

Answering the question about the influence of the criticism addressed to the Ankara leadership on the Turkish-Azerbaijani relations, Polukhov said that "internal rhetorics is internal rhetorics".

"Anyway Azerbaijani side always expressed and continues to express its position on some questions. Our principal position is that we are open and conduct transparent external policy, always clearly stating all priorities on issues discussed. In this very case, the issue of the Karabakh conflict is the biggest priority in our external policy and the position of Azerbaijan in this issue is principal and it was always declared everywhere", said spokesman for the Foreign Ministry.

As for the possible to introduce any corrections to the external policy of Azerbaijan in case of opening of the Turkish-Azerbaijani border, he noted that "statement about this has already been made".

Notably, this will raise tensions in the region and will be both strategically and tactically incorrect", noted he.
