Armenian expert: Protocol on resumption of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey to be signed April 16

08 April 2009 [14:33] - TODAY.AZ
"Armenia and Turkey are quite close to signing of an agreement on normalization of bilateral relations", said head of the Armenian center of national and strategic studies Richard Giragosyan in Yerevan.
"During the visit of the Turkish Foreign Minister to Yerevan on April 16 there will be signed a protocol on restoration of diplomatic relations with opening of embassies in a third country", noted Giragosyan. He also said that opening of borders is important not only for Amenia but also for Turkey.

"At the same time it should be noted that normalization of the bilateral relations has both negative and positive sides for both states. Appearance of a new player is envisioned in the Caucasus and this player is Turkey. It should be noted that today's Turkey is not the country that it was several years ago. Turkey is tired of endless talks with EU that will not bring to membership in the European Union", said ACSNIC director.

He considers that Turkey sees itself as a regional state and its gradual separation from the United States is connected with that. "Obama's visit to Turkey was necessary primarily for the United States that finds it difficult to withdraw troops from Iraq without Turkey's participation, though I think the visit was successful.

Obama said everything that he was to say and he did not hurt Turkey's feeling by the word "genocide". But I think he will do the same on April 24 and will call "Armenian genocide" "mass atrocities", said Giragosyan.
