Romanian ambassador to Azerbaijan: "I have no doubts that the Nabucco summit will be successful"

26 January 2009 [14:43] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az interview with Romanian ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary in Azerbaijan Nikolae Ureke.
- Earlier most experts were skeptical about prospects of implementation of Nabucco gas project, binding their opinion to the great policy in this issue. Don't you think that after the recent gas crisis between Russia and Ukraine chances for Nabucco implementation have grown significantly?

- Certainly, I think the Nabucco pipeline has good chances for implementation. These chances have grown dramatically after the recent well-known events.

- What Europeans, especially Romanians, expect from the Budapest summit on the said project?

- We hope very much that the summit on Nabucco will be successful. If success is reached, I have no doubts that we will advance in the implementation of this project, a number of measures will be taken in this direction, including adoption of an intergovernmental agreement on support of the activity of the Nabucco consortium. I think the prospects of Nabucco are very good.

- Do you consider that resources of Azerbaijan will be sufficient for this project implementation?

- Different countries may supply energy sources from Nabucco. Azerbaijan is among the most important countries. Along with it, there are some other countries in the region that may export gas via this pipeline, including Turkmenistan. Wer need to talk to Turkmen authorities about this issue. EU is extremely interested in it and EU states will take part in this discussion. I hope gas from different sources will be enough for the successful implementation of the project.

- Is the prospect of implementation of the said project among the topics of the upcoming visit of Romanian Foreign Minister to Baku?

- Yes. The Foreign Minister is preparing for a visit to Azerbaijan and during this visit he will discuss issues of bilateral relations, including economic cooperation between our countries. I am sure that Nabucco will be among the subjects of talks.

- When is the visit planned for?

- The date has not been coordinated yet, but currently we are planning to hold the visit in the second half of March.
