Union for Democracy speaks against referendum on changes to Azerbaijani Constitution

22 December 2008 [17:08] - TODAY.AZ
The Union for Democracy held its regular session, according to Azadlyg party chairman Ahmed Oruj.
He noted that the session participants discussed the sociopolitical situation, as well as the further plans of the Union.

The session participants adopted a final decision about holding a protest near the Iranian embassy to Azerbaijan on December 30. An appeal to the Baku mayor's office was sent regarding the conduction of the protest.

"At the session of the union, the parties also prepared a package of proposals due to the initiative of the Yeni Azerbaijan party regarding elimination of restrictions on election of one and the same person as a president for more than twice. The parties offer to all political structures to concentrate efforts to prevent execution of this idea.

We consider that the application of this idea contradicts to democratic norms", announced he.

The Union notably includes the Classical Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Azadlyg party, Popular Party of Azerbaijan (represented by deputy Panah Huseyn), National-Democratic Party of Azerbaijan and the Great Azerbaijan party.

Currently discussions are held in the Union about the accession of other political structures.
