Siyavush Novruzov: "Restriction in voting is the most antidemocratic action"

19 December 2008 [10:22] - TODAY.AZ
The restriction in voting is the most antidemocratic step", said deputy executive secretary of the Yeni Azerbaijan party Siyavush Novruzov.
It should be noted that the discussed topic was "The political outcomes of 2008".

The deputy noted that the rights of people to elect and the right of a citizen to be elected should not be restricted.

"The election of a president is not an administrative appointment. Changes do not envision the model of life-long president. They imply creation of equal conditions for all presidential candidates for each person to have a right to elect and be elected", said Novruzov.

Listing the US practice which started to be used in other countries, Novruzov said:

"Upon the completion of his presidency, Bill Clinton, who had the biggest percent on popularity, announced that the restriction on the election as a president for more than twice is an antidemocratic event. It appeared in the United States in the 1950s.

Before that Roosevelt was elected as the US president for more than twice. This issue was a result of confrontation between two persons. At that time Eisenhower had chances to be elected as a president for the third time. Yet Conti, who owned big corporations and stood against Eisenhower, advocated the amendments, prohibiting one and the same person to be elected as president for more than twice, in the US congress", noted the deputy.
