Number of potential presidential candidates reaches 18 in Azerbaijan

He said signature lists for signature collection have been issued to 16 candidates.

"The Central Election Commission has registered one candidate for presidential elections-working president Ilham Aliyev, who was nominated from the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party. At today's session, the Central Election Commission will consider the issue of registering two other candidates", noted Panakhov.

Presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on October 15 of 2008.

The elections will involve:

- chairman of Umid party, MP Iqbal Aghazade,
- chairman of the United Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, MP Qudrat Hasanquliyev,
- chairman of Muasir Musavat party Hafiz Hajiyev,
- chairman of the Liberal-Democratic party Fuad Aliyev,
- chairman of the Green party Mais Gulaliyev,
- deputy of the second summon parliament of Azerbaijan, former chairman of the Supreme Medjlis of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan Qulamhuseyn Alibeyli,
- research officer of the National Academy of Science of Azerbaijan Qudrat Isakov,
- unemployed Yashar Ahmedov, doctor Vuqar Seidov,
- pensioner Arif Aliyev,
- director of the Center of Social Research Aliisa Aghayev,
- editor of Expert newspaper Teymur Quliyev,
- correspondent of Medeniyyet newspaper Suleyman Quliyev.
