12 October 2010 [12:00] - TODAY.AZ
Archeological excavations have been stepped up in Neolithic Goytapa settlement in Azerbaijan’s western Tovuz region. The excavations have lasted here for three years already.

The Goytapa settlement, covering an area of about 2 hectares, is considered the oldest archaeological site in the Caucasus. Samples of material culture, and fragments of buildings found here indicate that it dates back to 6th millennium BC and the region was one of the economically developed back then.

The finding here include tools and household objects made of bone, remnants of dwellings and farm buildings built of bricks. Official of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Farhad Guliyev said an ancient sickle has been found here.

Azerbaijan Ministry of Culture and Tourism plans to create a museum in the area to conserve the Goytapa settlement.

Guliyev says this archaeological site can be an invaluable source of study of the country’s distant past. The excavations in Goytapa are held in conjunction with staff at Tokyo University.
