Some 226 people have taken vacant posts in the Azerbaijani schools system as a result of a contest for teachers, the Azerbaijan Education Ministry said. Some 62 vacancies remain, mainly in regional schools.
The ministry announced a teacher recruitment contest on Aug. 20 to fill vacancies in Azerbaijan's secondary schools. The contest ended last week. The majority if vacancies were in the fields of physical training, basic military training and information science.
The Education Ministry said that only a few teachers declined to fill positions once they had been selected. Last year, the Education Ministry conducted a tender to fill 365 vacancies in secondary schools in the 2009/2010 academic year.
There are some 170,000 teachers and more than 1,420,000 students in 4,552 public schools in Azerbaijan. Some 1,005 teachers work in 17 private comprehensive schools.
