Iran's ex-ambassador: It is naive to believe in China's "sympathy" to Iran

11 March 2010 [12:15] - TODAY.AZ
Former Iranian Ambassador to France Sadig Kharrazi, expressed his attitude to China's resistance against imposing more severe sanctions on Iran by the UN Security Council.
He said that it would be more naive than smart assessment, to think that China used its veto power because of "sympathy "to Iran.

"I have not heard that China used its veto power against imposing any resolution on Iran by  the UN Security Council. Of course, China could not agree on tougher sanctions, in particular in connection with the oil export" he said in an interview with Iran's Kharrazi radio.

"The Chinese economy develops, but the development requires energy coming from the continuous source." Given the damage that would be caused to the Chinese market and China's interests as a result of sanctions and other trade gains, it becomes clear the reason of disagreement of this country with tough sanctions," he added.

Replying o the question "Will China abide by the wishes of the West to apply tough sanctions against Iran," Kharrazi said that this question depends on how the West will satisfy China.

The U.S. and other Western countries accuse Iran of developing nuclear weapons for military purposes under the guise of peaceful nuclear energy program. Tehran denies the charges, saying that its nuclear program is aimed solely at meeting the country's electricity needs. The U.N. Security Council adopted five resolutions in connection with the suspension of Iran's nuclear program. Three involve the use of economic sanctions on Iran.

Presently, the West presented to the UN Security Council members - Russia and China an initial paper on the application of new sanctions against Iran. Despite the fact that Russia has promised to consider new sanctions, China has opposed the expansion of economic sanctions against Iran.
