Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has appointed elections to local authorities on May 30, presidential press secretary Manana Manjgaladze said today to a special briefing.
"The president decided to appoint the elections earlier than the time, so that political parties had the opportunity to prepare better," said the press secretary. Georgia's president called on parliament to timely adopt a law approving the timing of elections for 30 May.
Direct mayoral elections will be held only in Tbilisi, although the opposition demanded elections in six cities.
