Shopkeepers in Armenia periodically face different challenges  in doing business, which eventually leads to protests in Yerevan and other cities of the country.

Another such protest took place in front of the Armenian Parliament early this week. Shopkeepers of the Arinj and Surmalu shopping centers demanded from the authorities to amend the Tax Code and free them from unnecessary paperwork, which is an additional tax burden.

The protesters noted that they do not avoid paying taxes, but now their burden will increase. As the merchants noted, the tax service employees demand from them to provide a document on the movement of each imported good. This is unnecessary red tape that requires involvement of additional workforce.

“I need to transport goods from my warehouse to my sales point, or deliver them to the warehouse, and I have to spend eight hours to register all of this. I am tired, I beg you, let an employee from the government come and work with us all day, let him register every transported goods,” protester Karine Gevorgyan said.

“We want the paperwork to be reduced, we have to keep a separate employee to count each product. They want to keep us under control every minute,” she added.

This is not the first mass protest of Armenian merchants. During the April protests in front of  the Government and Parliament buildings, the protesters claimed that the Armenian tax authorities terrorized them by carrying out inspections at their shops and demanding their documents or bribes.

Last year, the traders demanded lower rents as they were not able to pay at the rates that the Armenian authorities established.

Under the current economic conditions, Armenian government had better not to impede the doing business, but on the contrary, to motivate entrepreneurs, in order to reap the benefits for the Armenian economy as a whole. However, it seems that the Armenian government aims to completely destroy the country’s economy.
