Iran, Georgia review expansion of economic cooperation

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific affairs Mehdi Safari conferred in Tbilisi on Tuesday with Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli on issues of mutual interests.

At the meeting, the two sides explored ways of expanding economic, commercial cooperation and investment in the construction of power plants and exchange of electricity between Iran and Georgia.

Iran is ready to host Iran-Georgia Investment Commission meeting in Tehran, Safari said and voiced Iran's readiness to exchange delegations on transportation, commerce along with the export of electricity to Georgia.

He also underlined the need to take advantage of existing capabilities in both countries to urge economic cooperation and increase the current level of trade exchange between the two countries.

The Georgian premier, for his part, lauded Iran's assistance in the export of gas to Georgia during critical winter conditions last year and called for continued cooperation between the two sides in energy and gas sectors.

Voicing his readiness to pay an official visit to Iran concurrent with the holding of Iran-Georgia Joint Investment Commission Meeting in Tehran, he expressed the hope that the upcoming commission meeting would prepare grounds for expansion of all-out economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries.

He expressed his country's readiness to ink a free trade agreement with Iran.

During the meeting, the two sides also studied grounds for expansion of trilateral cooperation between Iran-Azerbaijan-Georgia and also reviewed expansion of transportation, gas and electricity between the three countries.

Iran's envoy arrived in Tbilisi for a two-day official visit.
