Armenian fire trembles truce on troops contact line again

11 November 2013 [12:27] - TODAY.AZ

The Armenian Armed Forces opened fire at positions of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces located in the Gizilhajili and Ashaghi Eskipara villages of Gazakh region from the positions located in the villages of Berkaber of Ijevan region and Voskepar of Noyemberyan region on November 10-11, the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry reported.

Azerbaijani Armed Forces were also fired at from the positions located near the village of Garakhanbeyli of Fizuli region and from the positions on nameless heights in the territory of Khojavend region.

The shooting was countered by return fire.

Armenia captured Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts from Azerbaijan in a war that followed the Soviet breakup in 1991. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and nearly 1 million displaced by the war.

Large-scale hostilities ended with a Russia-brokered ceasefire in 1994 but Armenia has continued the occupation in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawal.

Peace talks mediated by Russia, France and the US have produced no results so far.
