(DIS)Armed to the teeth: Azerbaijani military expert about Armenia's desire to get modern weapons

13 August 2010 [13:33] - TODAY.AZ
“Armenia lacks funds to acquire expensive and modern weapons, but the appetite of Yerevan has always been great,” Azerbaijani military expert Uzeyir Jafarov said commenting on Armenian media reports claiming that Armenia is going to purchase military equipment.

"Armenia survives due to assistance from various countries, particularly Russia, which quenches its military-technical "hunger”. "Of course, acquisition of military equipment is an internal matter of Armenia. Azerbaijan does not need to be bothered by this. Azerbaijan keeps on acquiring modern technology by lawful means and we have to financial opportunity to do so,” the expert said.

“While buying offensive arms, Armenia should not forget that Azerbaijan has one of the strongest missile defense systems in the former Soviet Union. At one time the stake was in Baku, from where air defence systems along all the southern borders of the Union were controlled. At that time Armenia was subordinate to Baku headquarters. Today, Azerbaijan has to carry out consistent system work to upgrade this defense system. We have an opportunity to acquire more advanced anti-aircraft missiles than P-300," the expert noted.

"It is difficult to speculate about the level of Armenia’s armaments, since it receives most of the weapons illegally. But, nevertheless, we have a weapon which Yerevan lacks. Azerbaijan, due to its diligence abroad through lawful means has acquired such military equipment which Armenia will lack fore more years despite its strong desire to acquire it,” Jafarov noted.
