27 February 2009 [11:35] - TODAY.AZ
"Issues of security, economic and humanitarian cooperation will be priority for Azerbaijan in the framework of Eastern Partnership, said Azerbaijani FM Elmar Mamedyarov in Kiev when attending the opening of the office of GUAM secretariat.
"There are no such proposals yet. We are now developing the definite projects on which we might cooperate with EU in the framework of Eastern Partnership.

There is the understanding of how to build this cooperation on three "baskets" - security basket, economic basket and humanitarian basket", said Mamedyarov.

The Eastern partnership program aimed to strengthen relations between the six post-Soviet states including Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Belarus - and EU, was launched on December 4 of 2008.

The cooperation with the participating countries will be conducted due to creation of the free trade area and reaching strategic agreements provided that they do not become the full EU members.

He said filling these "basket" is a issue of a more detailed development.

Thus in the security sphere Azerbaijan sees a priority on the conflict topic on Nagorno Karabakh conflict, overall issues of security and the risks and threats including in the issue of combatting terrorism and drug trafficking.

In economic spheres Azerbaijan is ready to propose the issue of transit corridor, issue of energy security (supplies to the European market) and different economic projects beyond energy and oil sector.

According to the Minister, the third "basket" of Azerbaijan's humanitarian sector might consider the facilitation of visa regime, exchange of students, issues of legal and scientific sphere.

"We are developing different proposals concerning us in the country. EU, in turn, promoting its projects. By the 27+6 summit in Prague on May 7 it will be clear which of the projects are becoming priority, which of them are secondary and which are impossible to implement", noted the Minister.
