GUAM to mark 10th anniversary in Baku

The 10th anniversary of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development-GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) will be marked in Baku on October 10.
GUAM was established on October 10, 1997 in the framework of Council of Europe’s summit in Strasbourg. Presidents of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova adopted a joint communiqu?.

The document underlined the importance of four-sided cooperation basing on respect to sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability of borders, democracy, rule of law and human rights to strengthen stability and security in Europe.

Initial letters of the four countries formed abbreviation GUAM. Uzbekistan later joined the organization and it became GUOAM. But Uzbekistan soon left the organization.

GUAM heads of states officially announced the formation of GUAM – International Organization for Democracy and Economic Development on May 23, 2006 and adopted the organization’s statute.
