ICPS: "198 prisoners per 100,000 of the population in Azerbaijan"

The International Center for Prison Studies (ICPS) has announced the latest world prison population list.

According to APA, there are 198 prisoners per 100,000 in Azerbaijan. This rate is better in only Armenia (92), Tajikistan (159) and Georgia (165) in the CIS after Azerbaijan. In the post-Soviet arena Russia (532) and Belarus (532) have the highest prison population rate. Turkmenistan (489), Uzbekistan (489), Ukraine (417), Kyrgyzstan (390), Estonia (389), Kazakhstan (386), Latvia (337), Moldova (297), Lithuania (234), Azerbaijan (198), Georgia (165), Tajikistan (159) and Armenia (92) come next in the list.

The world prison population lists also includes Poland (209 per 100,00), the Netherlands (123), Italy (98), Japan (58), China (118), India (29) Saudi Arabia (110) and Iran (194).

The United States has the highest prison population rate in the world, some 714 per 100,000 of the national population.

According to the latest report of the US Justice Statistical Bureau, prison population is increasing 1.000 in number every week in US. 2.2 million prisoners are held in US prisons or one of every 136 is in prison. 12% of colored Americans, 3.7% of Latin America-born Americans and 1.7% of white Americans have prisoner experience. 9 million people in the world were deprived of liberty in 2005. This rate is 1.55 million per person in US and China and 760 thousand in Russia.
