Conference on methods of oil polluted lands cleaning held in Baku

According to Day.Az, the conference was opened by SOCAR vice president on ecological issues Mukhtar Babayev, who noted that oil has been produced in Azerbaijan for about 160 years and the mechanical method of production was used.

"Through these years lands and water have been polluted as old methods were used in transportation and storing. The ancient primitive method was used even while cleaning, which lead to imbalance", said he.

He noted that the ecological department is holding works for monitoring of the oil polluted lands and choice of the cleaning method and volume of works.

"The process requires large capital investments and time. It can not be said that this is a work of the coming years", said Babayev.

The works are notably held in the framework of the decree of president of September 28 of 2006 "On the complex plan of measures on improvement of ecological situation in Azerbaijan in 2006-2010".

The total area of the polluted lands in the country makes 3,231 hectares of which 2,705 fall on the Absheron peninsula and 526 on Bibieybat.

The world spends $200,000 for cleaning 1 hectare of land, while we have allocated $100,000.
