Azerbaijan to further develop sports

Azerbaijan is not going to cut funding sports sphere after the first European Games in Baku this year, said Azad Rahimov, Youth and Sports Minister.

"A special mechanism has been developed for financing sports in our country, which cannot be changed. The number of sporting events is growing every year,” he said on February 11.

“Along with this, the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be held next year. Special training courses for athletes are held. The necessary works are underway. Considering all these facts, no change is likely to happen in this field."

The biggest sporting event in Azerbaijan's history, the Baku 2015 European Games will attract more than 6,000 athletes to represent 50 countries in 20 sports on June 12-28.

Speaking about the fund of the Baku 2015, the minister said the budget of the first European Games consists of two parts.

"The first part of the investment is included in a state program which will run till 2018. The second part is the budget of the Baku 2015 European Games Operations Committee. These include the costs of salaries, technological systems, temporary facilities, communications, PR and daily expenses,” he said.

The minister added that 950 million manats was allocated for this purpose, more than 300 million of which has already been spent.

“The other parts of the investment will be spent for construction of the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Complex, Trap Shooting Complex and so on," Rahimov said.

The Baku 2015 Games will take place in 21 stadia and facilities located in Baku and Mingachevir city.

The grand opening ceremony of the games will take place in the 68,000-seat Baku Olympic Stadium. The Athletes Village will accommodate up to 7,300 people.

The Baku 2015 is the first major games ahead of number events of different nature.

Next year, Baku will host Formula 1 Grand Prix with a unique circuit along the Old City. In 2017, Azerbaijan will welcome Islamic Solidarity Games.

Another prominent event to come is the quarterfinals and three group games of the UEFA EURO 2020 that will also be held in Baku.

This ambitious plans show that the country is determined to develop the sport sector in the near future.
