11 May 2006 [13:18] - TODAY.AZ
Heavy rains in the north-western regions of Azerbaijan in the past three days caused floods in the Mazim, Balaken, Alazan and Tala rivers.

Ploughed fields in Upper Chardakhlar and Suvagil villages of Zagatala have been washed away by floods.

Chardakhlar village municipality head Hasan Gurbanov told APA that flood washed away nearly 50 hectares of cornfields in the bank of the Alazan River. Village roads have also been washed down by the floods. Gurbanov said that a bus full of passengers went down in the river but fortunately, no one has suffered.

Downpours caused serious damage to agriculture in Suvagil village. The village municipality head Khalid Mammadov said that the flooded Mukhakh River washed away 25 hectares of cornfields. Though the municipality took some measures to address the problems, it stands helpless before the natural disaster.

The Regional Hydrometeorology Office told the provincial bureau of APA that in the past three days, it rained in the amount of 45-50 mm in Sheki, Gakh, Zagatala and Balaken regions. This is rare event in the region.
