Iran to increase number of sturgeons in Caspian

Iran will breed and put into the sea 10,000 tons of sturgeon whitebaits to 2015, Deputy Chief of Iran's fishing and fish breeding company Shilat Ali Asgar Musahidi said. Iran annually put into the sea 400 million whitebaits of various fish species.

"Every year, 400 million whitebaits of various fish species, four million of which - sturgeon whitebaits, are bred and put into the Caspian Sea," - Musahidi said. The extent of breeding and putting sturgeon whitebaits into the sea vary depending on the year and growth, the Deputy Chief of the company Shilat said, noting that this number can increase to 12 million whitebaits, or be lower. In recent years, Iran provides special low interest loans to the private sector working in this industry to expand fish farming, Musahidi said.
