5.5 magnitude quake jolts east Turkey

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale has hit eastern Turkey, according to the country's main seismography center and earthquake institute, Press TV reported.

The earthquake hit the village of Kaustuk outside the town of Adilcevaz in the province of Bitlis in eastern Turkey at 12:05 a.m. local time on Wednesday (2205 GMT Tuesday), the Earthquake Research Institute said, Xinhua reported.

But the US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 5.6. So far there are no reports of casualties.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter, with a depth of 9.4 kilometers, was initially determined to be at 38.7143 degrees north latitude and 43.1330 degrees east longitude.

On October 23, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked southeastern Turkey, leaving more than 600 people dead.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the village of Tabanli in Van province.

The earthquake also jolted buildings in neighboring Armenia and Iran. It was the strongest temblor to hit Turkey in almost a decade.
