Armenia's population gets older - newspaper

27 September 2011 [12:30] - TODAY.AZ
The demographic situation in Armenia is worrisome primarily because of less births, an aging society, and migration, Yerkir daily writes.

"As UN Population Fund Armenia Country Office Executive Representative Garik Hayrapetyan told the paper in an interview, total fertility rate in 2010 was 1.55 per woman, in the case when 2.1 is necessary for securing simple reproduction of the population.

At present, the density of population at the age of 65 and above is 13 percent. ‘According to UN demographic aging scale, if this indicator is above 7 percent, the given population is considered aged,’ Hayrapetyan noted. In the past 10 years, Armenia’s total mortality rate grew approximately 13.3 percent and, as of April 1, 2011, it constituted 9.8 per 1,000 people. With such ‘development’ rate, Armenia’s population in 2050 will be 2.3-2.5 million," News.am with reference to Yerkir.
