World’s largest cinema screen to be set up in Batumi

11 May 2011 [11:40] - TODAY.AZ
The İzmir Cinema Association, which plans to set up the world’s largest screen in the autonomous republic of Adjara’s capital Batumi, has proposed the project to Georgian Prime Minister Levan Varshalomidze.

The association’s chairman Kayhan Kırmızıgül said Batumi is making efforts to be known as a city of culture and arts and become a brand in this field, and they wanted to support the city with a significant project.

He said the open-air cinema project with the world’s largest screen would make the city more popular within a short time. "Batumi wants to be known all around the world. This project will be a remarkable factor for the city’s promotion," Kırmızıgül said.

He said the screen would be 40 meters wide and 22.5 meters high, equal to an eight-story building, and they would organize a four-week cinema festival on the screen.

"World-class film galas will be held there and we will bring together the world’s best-known directors and artists. There will also be exhibitions and presentations and Batumi will be known as the ‘city with the world’s largest screen,’ giving it a significant place in international cinema."

Kırmızıgül said the event would feature a special program for Turkish cinema. "We will show films from famous Turkish directors there," he said.

Varshalomidze said the festival could be organized at the end of September, and requested another meeting to discuss the details of the project.
