From April 2011, the arsenal of Turkish Armed Forces will be supplemented by a new engineering marvel of Turkish scientists. This is a floating mobile offensive bridge “Samur”. Turkey's Defense Ministry has already ordered 52 units of these offensive bridges that are able to quickly throw a few 70-ton tanks across water barriers.
According to Turkish media, CEO of FNSS defense enterprise Nail Kurt said more than 150 Turkish engineers worked within 3.5 years to create “Samur”.
Kurt added that so far only Germany and France have manufactured these types of machines.
"The most important advantage of “Samur” is the ability to turn into a huge floating bridge able to move heavy weapons in a very short time. Moreover, in Germany similar types of weapons are used in flat water relief while “Samur” can become a bridge in any relief. This important element of the offensive process has been made completely of local materials and without involvement of foreign experts,” Kurt noted.
Samur's top speed is 100 km/h on land and 20 km/h on water. The bridge has a length of 12 meters, width of 4 meters and height of 3.5 meters. Total cost is $130 million.
