New head of Georgia's central Electoral Commission to be appointed

According to the amendments to the Electoral Code, Levan Tarkhnishvili, the head of the Electoral Commission of Georgia, yesterday had his authorities blocked.
In the nearest day the President of Georgia must appoint a new chairman of the Commission. According to the amendments, the candidate must be confirmed after negotiations of the head of state with representatives of NGOs.

After parliamentary and presidential elections of 2008, opposition leaders constantly demanded the resignation of Tarkhnishvili, accusing him of rigging elections - Interfax.

From January 4th to 8th the contest for vacancies in Commission takes place; only people with certificate of the electoral administration official are eligible to participate.

Yesterday the Conservative party of Georgia called on community to be active and join the process of electing new CEC members.

Kakha Kukava, the Secretary General of the party, said NGOs and community must name as many alternative candidates as possible, and on January 8th start consultations to select most competent and unbiased.
