U.S. supports NATO enlargement, and firmly recognises the right of any state to choose a union or alliance that people of this state want, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said at the final press conference with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in Batumi on Tuesday.
"Georgia, like any other state, may join an alliance which, in its opinion, most of all will ensure its security," she said.
Clinton reiterated that the U.S. supports Georgia's aspiration to NATO and help it to achieve the standards of the organisation. "This also applies to the military sphere, and the democratization of society," she said.
U.S. Secretary of State stressed that at the NATO summit in Chicago all the members of the organisation reaffirmed their commitment to the decisions of the summit in Bucharest, where it was said that Georgia will become a member of the alliance.
"Georgia has an annual program of action with NATO, and it does it perfectly, which will eventually lead to membership," she said.
