The demand for beef has increased in Armenia's capital Yerevan towards the New Year, and the market responds to this demand with the soaring prices. The general inflation is also playing a part in this. In comparison with same time period last year, beef prices in Yerevan increased by 19.5 percent in November 2011, and the current prices for one kilogram of beef ranges between 2,800 drams to 3,800 drams (US$ 7.32-$9.94), News.am reported.
And a key problem in supplying the capital with fresh meat is the absence of the link between Yerevan's trade organizations and the farmers.
To note, the inflation in the past two years has left an adverse qualitative impact on the food selection of Armenia's population. And as a result, low-income families are cutting down on their meat consumption.
