Azerbaijan agrees issue of state financing of parties

Parties that gain a certain number of votes in Azerbaijan in the next parliamentary elections will be funded by the state, Azerbaijani Parliamentary Speaker Safa Mirzayev told media yesterday.

He said the agreement was reached while discussing the bill on political parties in with the Venice Commission. Azerbaijan did not agree with a proposal to entitle foreigners to establish and finance the parties in Azerbaijan, he said. The current law on political parties was adopted in 1992.
