Azerbaijan's election as a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council is a great success, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme in Azerbaijan Fikret Akcura said addressing the international conference "20 Years of Independence: achievements and challenges in progressive, fair and dynamic state-building" in Baku.
"Azerbaijan achieved the highest human development category, and among the former Soviet republics only it reached such a high level of development," Akcura said. The index of food products significantly increased in Azerbaijan and along with it there is growth, mainly in the crops and livestock production.
"Given the government's strategy to reduce poverty, the current situation in Azerbaijan can be regarded as positive," Akcura said.He also stressed that Azerbaijani women are most active in the economic sphere.
"Women face fewer obstacles and difficulties in employment in Azerbaijan than in neighboring countries. Also, number of women MPs increase," Akcura said. He said there is another problem to be solved. "It is necessary to achieve a longer lifespan and reduce mortality among children under age 5," Akcura said.
