Azerbaijan`s foreign minister Elmar Mammadyarov had a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. In his meeting with Uruguay’s Foreign Minister Luis Almagro, Mammadyarov discussed the current state and prospects of the two countries` relations.

Mammadyarov highlighted Azerbaijan’s role in the South Caucasus region, the consequences of Armenia`s military aggression against Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijan`s territory.

The FM also emphasized his country`s “major problem” of refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of Armenia`s ethnic cleansing policy. He expressed regret over the fact the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council demanding unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian troops from Azerbaijan`s occupied lands still remain unfulfilled.

Uruguay`s FM said his country was keen to expand cooperation with Azerbaijan in various fields. The two ministers agreed to conduct consultations between the two countries` foreign affairs authorities. Also on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, Mammadyarov attended Open Government Partnership meeting initiated by U.S. President Barrack Obama.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister also met with Palau’s President Johnson Toribiong, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago Surujrattan Rambachan and Foreign Minister of Colombia Maria Angelo Holguín.

With the Colombian counterpart Mammadyarov signed an agreement between the two governments on mutual elimination of visa requirements for persons with diplomatic, official and service passports, as well as a memorandum on establishment of a mechanism of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and Colombia.
