Valery Chechelashvili: We rely on UN support for solution to the GUAM conflicts

04 May 2011 [15:00] - TODAY.AZ
"The protracted conflicts are not a problem of Azerbaijan only, but all GUAM countries", GUAM Secretary General Valery Chechelashvili told journalists during the GUAM Youth Forum in Tbilisi.

He said these conflicts had own peculiarities: "Principally, these conflicts have common features. We have common vision on these conflicts. We adopted joint declaration on the GUAM conflicts on May 26, 2006. We use this document while addressing the international organizations. These conflicts must be solved absolutely on the basis of international laws and norms and on the basis of territorial integrity. We hope in UN support because we have joint resolution on the settlement of GUAM conflicts. We always focus attention on these problems observing the international security".

GUAM Secretary General noted that there are different mechanisms to solve the conflicts. "This mechanism is in the format 5+2 in Moldova, in the format of the Minks Group in Karabakh, there is a Nevsky agreement in Georgia. GUAM doesn’t participate concretely in these mechanisms. But the countries involved in the conflicts don’t use all of their opportunities. I think the opposite side is also interested in the solution to the conflicts. We have to achieve our goals on the basis of international norms".
