UN: Opening new corridor for flights between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh impossible without ICAO's decision

02 April 2011 [13:07] - TODAY.AZ
Opening a new corridor to carry out flights between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh (Azerbaijan’s occupied region) is impossible without the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) decision, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Fikret Akcura believes.

"It is impossible to carry out such flights without their permission," Akcura told journalists on Saturday.

Armenia plans to open the airport in Khankendi in May. Armenian President said on Thursday that he will be the first passenger of an aircraft, which will depart from Khankendi.

Armenia has no right to operate the airport in Khankendi, built in the Azerbaijani occupied territories. This contradicts all international conventions and will not be allowed by any international organizations, including an influential organization such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), AZAL spokesman Maharram Safarli said earlier.

It is necessary to obtain relevant documents and approval from the ICAO to operate the airport.

Azerbaijan has informed the organization about inadmissibility of carrying out flights from this airport.
