European Commission President: Maintaining status quo not acceptable option to resolve Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

16 March 2011 [14:52] - TODAY.AZ
Maintaining the status quo is not an acceptable option to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which must be resolved peacefully based on principles of non-use of force, territorial integrity and the peoples’ rights for self-determination, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso believes.

Barosso made this statement after the meeting with the Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan in Brussels on March 15, Mediamax reported.

"We remain concerned about continuing armed incidents at the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh and the ongoing militarization in the region," Barosso added.

He said the "EU continues to support the normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations strongly".

"We urge both sides to stay committed to this historical process. I am confident that there will be new opportunities for this dialogue in the future," Barroso said.
