Ramiz Mehtiyev: "Journalists will not be pardoned in Azerbaijan"

Issue of pardoning three imprisoned reporters is not on the agenda in the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan.
According to Novosti-Azerbaijan, the due announcement was made by the head of presidential administration Ramiz Mehtiyev.

"There has been no such proposal in the Presidential Administration", he told reporters.

Eynulla Fatullayev, editor-in-chief of the Realny Azerbaijan and Gundelik Azerbaijan newspapers, Ganimat Zahid, editor-in-chief of Azadlyg opposition newspaper and his brother Azadlyg reporter Mirza Sakit are currently in jail under various articles in Azerbaijan.

Mehtiyev previously announced that imprisoned reporters are not political prisoners and their arrests are not politically motivated.

"They were brought to responsibility by courts and they should settle their issues via courts", he noted.

Speaking about freedom of press and speech in Azerbaijan, he noted that activity of press is not restricted in the country.

"The situation has improved as compared to 1993-1995 and press is developed now", he concluded and added that he assesses the situation with freedom of press as favorable.
