Macron's fears are starting to come true

07 April 2025 [10:10] - TODAY.AZ
The French authorities are concerned about the potential territorial ambitions of the United States, related to their intention to take Greenland for themselves, writes Figaro, citing the words of an unnamed minister. According to the minister, the probability that the United States will try to make claims to French territories is very high.

"What is happening in Greenland could easily happen in New Caledonia, Polynesia, or overseas territories. This could happen to us," the minister, whom the publication does not name, said with concern.

It should be noted that the small islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, with a population of about 6 thousand people, were included in the controversial list released by Donald Trump on April 2. The islands are overseas territories of France, and the maximum duties of 50 percent imposed on them by Trump apply to Paris, and not to small islands off the coast of Canada, whose economy is fishing. Although the islands have their own flag, they are completely subsidized by Paris.

Let's calm down the French side. Trump doesn't need territories, he needs resources, and Saint Pierre and Miquelon don't have them. Unlike Greenland. Washington has set its sights on Greenland not for the sake of square kilometers, but for the sake of its bowels. According to Euronews, Greenland has huge reserves of lithium, cobalt, copper and rare earth metals - exactly the resources needed for weapons, batteries and green energy. So there is nothing threatening France here.

Paris should be more concerned about other demands of the new US administration. For example, the American Embassy in Paris recently sent letters to French companies demanding that they abandon their anti-discrimination policies, warning that failure to comply would lead to a break in cooperation with the US government. This was reported by the French media. Recall that when Trump came to power, he declared the end of the era of gender perversion, pointing out that there are only two sexes - male and female. Knowing about the orgy that is taking place in Europe and especially in France, he set a similar condition for French companies dealing with the United States. The embassy's letter emphasized that the new rules apply to all U.S. contractors and suppliers, regardless of their citizenship and place of work. The companies were given five days to do everything about everything. As Le Figaro noted earlier, in March, representatives of the telecommunications sector were already threatened with termination of contracts and lawsuits for maintaining inclusion programs. The French authorities are aware of the situation, and, according to a source close to Economy Minister Eric Lombard, this policy reflects the values of the new US administration, but does not coincide with the position of France.

In terms of France's perceived inclusivity, there is something to worry about. Let's recall the scandalous opening of the Olympic Games. In recent years, LGBT membership has become a passport to a better life and high positions in many European countries. It will be interesting to see how Paris will resist the pressure of the White House and how it will choose between trade with the United States and the "right" to choose a gender.

But back to the islands. As we have already noted, these overseas territories of France do not have any important resources that Washington might be interested in. But if Paris misbehaves, the aforementioned islands may well attract more attention.

France's fears are understandable. After the end of the era of colonialism, it continues to retain its former colonies with all its might. Realizing, of course, that sooner or later it will end. And those times are just around the corner. Her imperial appetites, for which there had been no barriers before, have begun to face problems in the last few years. The country is losing its former colonies one by one, and today it is also facing the threat of losing its "overseas territories." Paris had believed in its strength and "greatness" for too long and did not expect to be driven out of Africa, which it had considered its playground for centuries. One by one, the countries of the so-called "French Africa" began to get rid of the influence of the informal overlord. France has not been able to do anything to keep its power here. I had to retreat.

In addition to losing Africa, France may also lose its "overseas territories", thus losing the status of a maritime power. New Caledonia has become a headache for Paris. Now it's Mayotte's turn, an island in the Indian Ocean.

As reported by Radio Franceinfo the other day, French MPs called on the country's authorities to create a new, second naval base on the island of Mayotte. It is planned to deploy an additional 100 military personnel on the island, who "will be supported by a new amphibious vehicle." In the period up to 2027, an ocean-going vessel will stay in the area for 150 to 200 days. By 2030, the "permanent presence of the A400M in the Indian Ocean" will allow for the transportation of troops. According to Franceinfo, it was decided to allocate 13 billion euros in 2024-2030 for military spending in order to "ensure the sovereignty of the overseas territories."

These measures are caused by the turbulent situation in neighboring Mozambique. French MPs are also very concerned, according to a report by Franceinfo, about the growing interest in Mayotte from Russia, China and Azerbaijan and "their support for claims to the archipelago from the Comoros Islands."

However, the real reason for the concern of the French parliament is the growing anti-colonial sentiment in Mayotte. Last year, riots broke out in Mayotte, caused by the worsening crime situation and insecurity. Citizens blocked the main roads and set up barricades. The reason was the illegal migration to Mayotte from Africa and other Comorian islands, which Paris is not even trying to combat. The residents of Mayotte demanded not the forced eviction of migrants, but the closure of France's borders, if the island is its overseas territory. But Paris is not very interested in the safety of French citizens living in Mayotte.

In September 2023, Mayotte experienced a severe water crisis when there was practically no drinking water on the island. People came out to protest, demanding that the metropolis take action.: "We are part of France, and we are allowed to die of thirst." Fortunately, the rainy season began, and the population of Mayotte was saved without taking action by the overlord.

The water problem made itself felt again after the catastrophic Hurricane Shido that swept through Mayotte in December 2024. A few days after the disaster, Macron traveled to Mayotte and was booed by the locals. The islanders accused the state of inaction and demanded Macron's resignation. The offended president got into an argument with the residents of the island, saying that "if it weren't for France, you would have 10,000 times more trouble." That was all he could say.

Last year, the Baku Initiative Group held an international conference on "France's illegal occupation of the island of Mayotte in the Union of the Comoros." During the conference, an agreement was signed with the Maore Committee on cooperation in the fight against the French colonial policy on the island of Mayotte and for its return to the Union of the Comoros in accordance with international law. The corresponding message was sent by the Baku Initiative Group to the UN Secretary General, the heads of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the European Commission, the League of Arab States and the African Union. The message emphasized that France, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is abusing its powers by obstructing initiatives to eliminate violations of international law.

France currently owns thirteen "overseas territories" of various statuses. These are mostly small islands that the French managed to retain after the abolition of the colonies. Paris attributes some territories to itself in opposition to the decisions of the United Nations. Thus, the United Nations does not recognize France's rights to Adele's Land, but this territory is still included by Paris in the French Southern and Antarctic Territories. In violation of the UN decision, France retained its protectorate over Mayotte (Maore). On October 21, 1976, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution "vigorously condemning the French presence in Mayotte, which is a violation of the national unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the independent Republic of the Comoros."

Mayotte is a small island in the Comoros archipelago. In 1976, the Comoros held a referendum, which resulted in its liberation from French colonial rule. Since then, Mayotte has been the subject of disputes between France and the Comores. By owning the island, France is trying to maintain a strategic presence in the Indian Ocean. Dependence on France did not bring prosperity to the inhabitants of the island. Mayotte is the poorest department in France, and the metropolis is not taking any measures to remedy the situation. The billions that are being spent on strengthening the military presence on the island could be used for its development.

As recent events show, France's neocolonial aspirations can suffer greatly. And this time she won't have to blame Azerbaijan for this. Let's see if the French parliamentarians decide to have anti-American tantrums and risk opening their mouths to accuse the United States of something.
