Conference for the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea ended

26 May 2007 [13:38] - TODAY.AZ
The conference for the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea – the first legally binding agreement on any subject ever adopted by the five Caspian neighbors – started in Baku on May 23 ended yesterday.

One clause of the final draft document was strongly debated.

The sides did not agree to the final phrase on solving the issue on setting up standing secretariat of Tehran Convention and envisaging its place at the next meeting.

Though Azerbaijan proposed to remove the clause from the decision, the proposal was not supported.

During the break, the working groups decided to substitute this clause with the phrase "Debates on the issue will continue".

According to the decision, the second conference will be held in the first half of 2008 in Iran, APA reports.

Final document comprising eight clauses on the results of the conference and the ministers' statement comprising 12 clauses were adopted.
