Germany supports resolutions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh adopted by the UN Security Council, member of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Socialist Union (CDU/CSU) fraction, MP Kei Wegener has told the European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS).
“So, Armenia must withdraw its military forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. The UN has demanded this for 20 years, and this is also the European Union`s position,” he added.
Mr. Wegener noted: “Last year, during so-called presidential elections held in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, the EU High Representative Catherine Ashton declared that Europe did not recognize the results of the elections. The rights of refugees for repatriation are stipulated in the resolutions of the UN Security Council. If the occupation of Azerbaijani territory comes to an end, the IDPs can return back”.
The German MP noted the settlement of the conflict and the return of the occupied territories would be an important step towards establishing security and stability in the whole Caucasian region.
He said Germany was very much interested in strengthening the regional role of Azerbaijan, adding his country was promoting Azerbaijan in organizations like the EU and NATO. “Azerbaijan maintains good relations with our partner Israel, too.”
According to Mr. Wegener, Germany is ready to continue its efforts towards finding a solution to the Karabakh problem. “This will also be applied in the context of foreign policy cooperation with the EU and the OSCE.”
“But the first step must come from the conflicting parties. They must create a favorable climate for successive negotiations. First and foremost, Armenia must finally meet the demands of the UN Security Council. However, if unilateral measures like the opening of the Khojaly airport in the Nagorno-Karabakh continue, achieving a neede result will be a difficult task,” he added.
