‘Armenia is losing already low weight in regional affairs’

15 February 2012 [14:15] - TODAY.AZ
It can be assumed that cut in the foreign aid provided to Armenia is primarily linked with the U.S. policy, Expert Ilgar Velizade said, while commenting on the reports that President Barack Obama urged to cut aid to Armenia and instead increase aid to Turkey.

He said the U.S. allocates funds to the targeted and important programs, to support strategic partners. The reduction in aid to Armenia is directly related to the interests of the United States in the region, and, particularly, in Armenia.

Velizade believes the Obama administration, shows that in the region, it focuses on Turkey, which is a strategic partner of the United States. And Armenia is losing the already low weight in regional affairs and regional policy.

“Moreover, the Armenian diaspora is one of the weak diasporas in the United States. It is not represented by any major oligarchs, tycoons. Thus, a proposal to reduce aid to Armenia is a measure of the Armenian diaspora’s weight in this country," he said.

"The United States is primarily governed by its own, purely national interests, which do not coincide with the interests of Armenia. And if you draw a parallel with France, Washington, unlike Paris, in its policy puts the emphasis on permanent centers of power, which is Turkey. Therefore, a good relationship with it is very profitable and promising for the foreign policy of any country. As for Armenia, it lacks any power and Obama's statement has once again showed that the way of support to countries such as Armenia, is counterproductive," he noted.
