'Armenian genocide' bill contradicts French Constitution

26 January 2012 [13:22] - TODAY.AZ
French law professors Bertrand Matte and Anna Levada have denounced the Senate`s passing a bill criminalizing the denial of the so-called Armenian genocide. “The bill contradicts the Constitution of France,” the professors said in an article in Paris-based Liberation newspaper.

“First and foremost, the bill restricts the freedom of expression and speech, as well as the right to conduct scientific researches.” The professors noted the passage of the bill contradicted Europe`s political system “because it is courts that should consider genocide-related issues”.

“Under French laws, genocide, racism and similar elements are considered a crime. So, there was no need in adopting this bill and causing new problems,” the professors said in the article.
