Meteorite strikes spectators at cricket match

27 July 2010 [14:25] - TODAY.AZ
Two cricket fans got more than they bargained for while watching a match over the weekend and ended up being hit by a meteor strike.
Jan Marszel, 51, and Richard Haynes, 52, were watching Sussex play Middlesex at Uxbridge when a rock, believed to be 4.5 billion years old, fell from the sky. The black space rock, which was about three inches long, split in two as it fell to the ground, near the pitch, before jumping back up and hitting Mr Marszel in his chest.

The IT consultant said: "It landed five yards inside the boundary and split in two.  One piece bounced up and hit me in the chest and the other ended up against the boundary board."

"It came across at quite a speed – if it had hit me full on it could have been very interesting."

While Mr Haynes said: ‘We both looked up at the same time and saw a black object coming towards us.

"We saw it come in straight over the ground from quite a way out – it was definitely a meteorite."

The pair handed over the rocks to experts, who will examine them for more information, the Daily Telegraph reported.
