A Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer prevents a bank robbery

19 April 2010 [12:25] - TODAY.AZ
A Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Kim Komenich can add a new talent to his resume - crime fighting.
Kim Komenich was unsuspectingly waiting behind the robber when he saw the man try to take money from a cashier at a bank in San Jose, California.

Mr Komenich - who is 6ft 2ins and weighs nearly 19 stone - grabbed the man in a bear hug and held him for about five minutes until police arrived.

No weapon was found on the man, who was arrested along with two companions.

The award winning photographer, whose crime-stopping act was caught on CCTV, told the San Francisco Chronicle: "My main reason for doing it was that it seemed like the guy was down on his luck.

"I just didn't want things to escalate. It was sort of a half-baked attempt at a bank robbery."

Mr Komenich, who has covered stories in Vietnam, the former Soviet Union, El Salvador, Iraq and Guyana, added: "All my life, I've been a witness. I haven't really intervened because it was my job to watch."

The 53-year-old is now an assistant professor of new media at San Jose State University.
