Mobile plant to recycle missile fuel launched in Azerbaijan

04 July 2006 [16:20] - TODAY.AZ
A mobile plant for recycling missile fuel, commonly known as melange, was commissioned on Tuesday in the settlement of Alyaty, 80 kilometers south of capital Baku.

The plant will recycle missile fuel that has remained in Azerbaijan since the Soviet times, Itar-Tass reports.

Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov said at the unveiling ceremony that the recycling of missile fuel is made within the framework of a conversion program jointly with NATO specialists.

A total of 1,500 tons of fuel are to be processed in the country within one year's time. After work is finished in Alyaty, the plant will be moved to the city of Mingechaur, a major industrial center of the republic, situated 320 kilometers west of Baku. The project costs two million euros.

According to the head of the project, professor of the Branderburg Technical University, Wolfgang Spira, the storage term has expired and it is no longer safe to store it in the republic, as melange harms the environment and the people.

Military specialists said the missile fuel will be processed into a fertilizer, which will be supplied to local farms.

Azerbaijan has been cooperating with NATO within the Partnership for Peace program since 1994.
