Azerbaijani boxer Mahammadrasul Majidov (91 kg) matched with British Anthony Joshua in the final of the World Boxing Championships held in Baku on Saturday. Gaining victory over his rival, Majidov was conferred the title of world champion.
Other final battles with the participation of Azerbaijani boxers took place in the championship held at the Heydar Aliyev Sports-Concert Complex.
In the category of up to 90kg, European champion Teymur Mammadov stepped into the ring against the Ukrainian Alexander Usik. 18-year-old Azerbaijani boxer was unable to overcome his rival, losing match with a score of 15:25.
Winners in other weight categories were Chinese Zou Shiming (49 kg), Russian Misha Aloyan (52 kg), Cuban Lazaro Alvarez Estrada (56 kg), Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko (60 kg), Brazilian Everton Lopes (64 kg), Ukrainian Taras Shelestyuk (69 kg) and Evgeny Shcheglov (75 kg), Cuban Julio la Cruz (81 kg).
The World Championship, held from Sept 26 to Oct. 8, was attended by 570 boxers from 113 countries. This is a record figure for the number of countries and sportsmen.
