The UN Office in Azerbaijan held a roundtable on the occasion of the World Population Day – 11 July. The event was organized by the UN Department of Public Information and Center for Economic and Social Development. The roundtable was a kind of a start of the 7 Billion Actions campaign covering 11 July – 31 October.
Envera Selimović, UN Department of Public Information Representative in Azerbaijan, said that 11 July was first marked as World Population Day in 1987, when the world’s population reached 5 billion.
“By 31 October, 2011, the world’s population will reach 7 billion. As said in the message of the UN Secretary General concerning the World Population Day, Reaching a global population of seven billion is a numerical landmark, but our focus should always be on people,” she said.
