Ministry of National Security detains diamond smuggler

A diamond smuggler was arrested as a result of operational measures conducted by the Ministry of National security of Azerbaijan.

He was detained red-handed while attempting to smuggle 141.14 carat of diamond to Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani citizen Farajov Mayis Shahverdi conspiring with a group of others organized diamond smuggling from Dubai, UAE to Azerbaijan. Farajov left Baku for Dubai on June 11, 2011 and returned on June 15. On his arrival he was detained in the airport’s parking area by the officers of the Ministry of National Security and 141.14 carat diamond amount to AZN 43 240 was seized.

The Investigative Office of the Ministry of National Security launched criminal investigation under article 206.3.2 (smuggling by a group of persons) and Farajov was detained as a suspect.

The investigation is underway.
