
About 50,000 hectares of cultivated land left under water due to heavy rains in the regions of Azerbaijan, which caused a significant damage to the agricultural sector, Deputy Agriculture Minister Bahram Aliyev said.
"Of the total amount 18,000 hectares of land fall to the grain and 23,000 acres - cotton, vegetables and other agricultural products," Aliyev said.
He said the state commission calculates the amount of damage caused by torrential rains and the damage will be fully compensated by the government.
"As soon as the water accumulating in the crop areas gone, re-seed will be launched with support from ministry. The ministry's fund will provide the people with seeds and animals will be provided to farmers and households at the expense of imports," Aliyev said.
In recent days, floods occurred in 40 districts of Azerbaijan due to rise in Kura River and rainfalls. As a result of the disaster, about 20,000 houses was flooded, more than 300 destroyed, 2,000 were declared as unsafe to live in.
