
Azerbaijan's Justice Minister Fikrat Mammadov has met today Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg.
Mammadov briefed Hammarberg on the ongoing reforms in the country to protect human rights, particularly the rights of prisoners, to raise the effectiveness of justice and improve penitentiary system.
He also recalled the bilateral meetings held on the sidelines of a conference on the future of the European Court of Human Rights which took place recently in Switzerland.
For his part, Hammarberg said he keeps an eye on the ongoing judicial reforms in Azerbaijan. He also hailed the reforms carried out in the country to improve the penitentiary system.
Hammarberg pointed out he also visited the Baku pre-trial detention facility which he said meets international standards.
They also discussed activities of NGOs and mass media as well as ways how to improve the legislation.
