AIDS kills 7 in Lenkoran, Azerbaijan in 2007

Seven residents of the Lenkoran region died of AIDS in 2007, as reported by Remiali Ibishov, head of the HIV/AIDS diagnostics lab under the local Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology, said.

He noted that 6 of 7 people are men and 1 is a woman. R.Ibishov added that 34 HIV-infected people including 29 men, 4 women and 1 child were revealed in the Lenkoran region last year.

On the whole, the number of the infected reached 184 people in the region except for the Djalilabad and Bilesuvar regions (the residents of these villages are not examined in the said laboratory).

117 HIV-infected people live in Lenkoran, 34 in Masally, 22 in Astara, 6 in Yardymly, and 5 in Lerik. According to the laboratory director,  those who lived in foreign countries, especially in Russia, for earning a living, account for the greater part of the HIV-infected.

People who have been abroad for more than 3 months must undergo medical examination on voluntary basis.
